Tool #11

My favorite tools.

Bringing it into the classroom.
I know that for sure I will be bringing in blogger into my classroom if I want to collaborate with other classes on a project. I will also be using wordle as I retire words from my word walls in the classroom. I can assign a student to generate these and publish them on a brad folder that students can go back to and refer to these words. I can also post the wordle to the somewhere near the word wall.
Last words.
I believe that with every tool I was able to gain some knowledge that I did not before and I am so excited to bring them into my classroom. I am not a master at everything but I do look forward to coming back to the 11 Tools Blog for help.

Tool #10

Being a Good Digital Citizen: What I want my students to understand.
1.       Students must understand that they must always be safe while browsing the internet.
2.       The effects of cyber bullying.
3.       The importance of copy rights
I plan to teach this by using the copyright video presented on the copyright tool and by presenting them with the Isafe fact sheet because it also covers the points I mentioned above.
Teaching: Digital Citizenship & Involving the parents.
I plan on teaching digital citizenship the first weeks of school. I think that it is important students to be good digital citizenships before they can start putting their hands on any technology device we might be using in the classroom. While going over safety, cyber bullying, and procedures on how to handle these devices. Together we will establish rules, sign in and out sheets, tech monitors. In the end of this all the students will have to sign a Digital Citizenship agreement along with their parents that will go over the SBISD technology policy, rules and procedures established by our class. This agreement will also inform the parents about how these devices will be used by the students in the classroom.

Tool #9

1.       I think that it is important for teachers to tie technology to the objectives because this way there is a purpose to why the students are using the technology in the classroom. Many of our students spend a lot of time using technology outside of the classroom and I believe if we tie an objective to the technology the students are using in the classroom we can avoid the negative thoughts (“oh they are just playing on the computer”) outsiders might have about technology in the classroom.
2.       Having the objective tied to the technology gives the students a limit to what they can do while using technology in the classroom. Giving the students a task that they must accomplish while using the stations is a way in which you can hold them accountable at these stations and keep them on task.
3.       The two interactive websites that I liked were: Mangahigh and Tenmarks.
Mangahigh- During my student teaching I was introduced to this interactive website by my mentor teacher. I really enjoyed it because you can give your students challenges and I was able to see how competitive and how eager the students were to get on to mangahigh. I also liked that as the students progress the activities become more challenging.
Tenmarks- I was not able to log into the actual cite and explore through it but based on what I was able to see and the description read on the 11 tool website I really liked this website because the teacher actually creates the activities the students work on. This makes it to where your activities are related to your objectives and your students can go work on these activities during learning centers. It also seems like your GT students can learn beyond by exploring beyond while exploring videos you post in this cite. This website can also work as a reinforcement and checking for understanding since you are able to see the progress your student.
Holding Students Accountable
Mangahigh- assign challenges for your students to work on  and give them a deadline to when they must complete them all and you can also let them know how many challenges they should complete each day or while they are working on this station.
Tenmarks- You can do the same thing as mentioned above and you can also be checking your students progress. Having a centers journal can also hold the students accountable if you have them write what they do daily and have then tell you about any challenges they might encountered.
3 Apps from Itouch/Ipad

Some apps that I found that might be useful for my learning station were Arithmetick, AstroFacts, Chalkboard multiplication. During my student teaching I discovered that many students in the upper grades still do not know their math multiplication facts. Knowing these facts are essential when learning about fractions and percentages so I was thinking about implementing math fact challenges to my students and these facts will help them practice them before they have to come up and do the challenge.

Other ways in which the Ipod Touch can be used.
·         Recording videos for our online blog
·         Students record activities they are working on.
·         They can record and practice for a project presentation and watch the video and see what they need to improve.

Tool #8

Things learned about the classroom devices.
  1. How to create an iTunes account.
  2. How to get apps in iTunes
  3. Where to find approved apps by SBISD
Managing the devices in the classroom.

  1. I will set up rules with the students on how and when we use these devices.
  2. I will set up assign a number to each device and I will have students sign out and in the devices ( i will assign this job to one of the students in class weekly that will supervise the signing in and out process).
  3. I plan to use these devices during small group activities.  

Tool #7

Green Bean Project
a.            Content objective: Which brand of soil will develop full grown green beans in the shortest amount of time.
b.            When you plan to implement: I plan to implement this in the beginning of the school year while going over the scientific method and keep this project going through the year.
c.            What tool(s) you plan to use: I plan to use Google docs to create spread sheets of the plant growth, a blog to post the data and pictures or videos.
d.            A brief description of the project: Both classes will conduct a science throughout the school year. Each class plant green bean plants water them the same day, same amount of water, plant will be kept inside the classroom. The only difference will be the type of soil each class uses. Students will record plant growth and they will share the data weekly. In the end the classes will determine which soil was better ( the one that develops full grown green beans faster).

Tool #6

I also used TodaysMeet and here is the link to how I could use it in my classroom. In TodaysMeet I asked my students to explain to their peers what Common Factors  are. This is a way for me to check for understanding and sometimes there are many ways to say explain somethings by creating this open blog maybe a student that did not understand how I explained the topic might understand it if they see it from another students point of understanding

Tool #5

I used ABCya! to create a word cloud. I think this one I would use in the beginning of the year. I would like to have my students think of my classroom as their second home since they do spend half of their day in school. I would let them know that this is like their second home and that I expect for them to work as a team. I can show them this word cloud about my idea of what being part of a team means. As a class we can add more words and in the end we could post this in our classroom to remind us what is expected. Or they can each have a small one taped to their desk to remind them.

Storybird was the other tool I used. This would be a great way for students to create their own stories based on the pictures that are on there. I could also just select 10 different images that every student must use and we can probably come out with 24 different stories that develop with just those 10 images. Students could then post them on our class blog and then share their stories and allow other people's input.

Tool #4

The last part of my student teaching I did at SBISD. I was introduced to Google docs by my mentor teacher. One of the assignments required the students to do a report on an individual that contributed in the Texas Revolution. At first I was going to have the students create a poster with facts about the individual they choose but after being introduced to Google docs the students did their work on the computer and submitted their work on there.It seemed really neat the only issue I had was that some students had to share computers and just computer time over all. Creating documents and being able to share them with your team member I think will be very beneficial when working on lesson plans or road maps because we can all work together and edit things in just 1 document.The document that I created and shared with my 5th grade team was a student contact information spread sheet. The form I created was just to see how each of us would like our homerooms to be identified as. I think I will definitely use the form app to create quizzes that they students might do during small groups to check for understanding.

Tool #3

After browsing some of the video hosting sites mentioned in this tool the ones I found most useful for my content would have to be the following:
Kidstube.com -here students can watch the step by step process of some experiments that are available on this website. This might be helpful for visual learners or ELL’s.
Discovery Education -this site I used while completing my student teaching at SBISD.  Videos were useful to introduce new topics to students or as reinforcement. During small stations students could go back and search for videos related to the topics being studied in the classroom.
School Tube – by browsing through school tube I discovered  a video that made math look very hands on and I really enjoyed watching this and this is something that I know I want to incorporate in my classroom but was not sure how to. This video sure gave me ideas. I also believe School Tube is a pretty neat video hosting site that I could use in the future to share what is going on in my classroom with other teachers and parents.

Copy Right and Fair Use
Most of the things about copy right I already knew because of course in College professors always make sure to let us know about copy right whether it is a paper your writing or a presentation you need to always give credit to anything you use that you do not create. The new thing I did learn about is fair use and came from the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy Education video. Transformativeness is something I didn’t know about .This says that  if you are adding value and repurposing the material you used you really don’t have to cite.  Even though I now know this I think it will just be safe to cite anything used whether big or little or if it is change just to avoid any problems. I really loved this video and I think I would use it in my class to show my students about copyright and fair use.

Tool #2

My thoughts about building and participating in an online community and participating in a PLN.

I think that being part of a PLN and contributing to them being either creating our own PLN or commenting into blogs we visit is a great way to share the knowledge and ideas that we have. As a new teacher and during my student teaching I have at times relied on teacher blogs and website to get ideas on either classroom management or lesson planning ideas. I will admit that I had never left my thoughts or input into any blog or site I visited because I did not think it was that important. After watching the videos on PLN and reading through the information on this tool I have now changed my mind. I think it is important for the owner of the blog to know that you have used some of their ideas and tell them what worked for your class, what didn’t or even if you changed something or added something that they might not have considered. After visiting the blogs from the list I knew I had to comment on one. I choose to comment on http://booksforellkids.blogspot.com/2011/02/books-in-different-languages.html#comment-form. I must say that sharing your comments where the whole world can possibly see them is a bit intimidating than just sharing your thoughts in person. I really had to think about what I was sharing and yes I had to delete and retype a few times but… I DID IT ! This is also the blog that I will follow because it provides websites that i might refer back to when ever i might need to find book for my ELL students because sometime local book stores do not have a wide variety of books that are not in English.

Tool #1

This is the second time I am creating my blog because my SBISD email was changed and I could not log into my other blog. Was really looking towards working on tool #4 so restarted it. I must say that creating the blog,Voki, and embedding the Voki into my blog was fairly easy after having done it before.
